But recent studies have shown that bulking up and other activities can also add gray matter to the brain and reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Several universities have conducted studies that find a correlation between higher weekly calorie burn rates and a larger volume of gray matter of the brain. Studies have found that simply moving your body helps. It is not necessary to do high intensity or punishing workouts. Rather, gains came from everyday leisure activities that may be more enjoyable, such as gardening, walking, dancing, riding an exercise bicycle, and other common activities. It can be difficult to control our minds – it seems as if, like a balloon in the wind, it is blown here and there. Go Lean With Protein

by Isabelle Workman 1. Chose seafood at least twice a week. Look for seafood rich in omega 3 fatty acids such as salmon, trout, or herring. 2. Choose beans, peas, or soy products as a main dish or part of a meal often, for example, chili with kidney or pinto beans, split pea, lentil, minestrone, or white bean soup. Eat baked beans, black bean enchiladas, garbanzo or kidney beans on a chef salad, red beans and rice (a particular New Orleans favorite), veggie burgers, hummus (chickpea spread) on pita bread. 3. Choose unsalted nuts as a snack, on salads, or as main dishes. Use nuts to replace meat or poultry, not an addition to these items. Use pine nuts in pesto sauce in lieu of pasta, add slivered almonds to steamed vegetables. Add toasted peanuts or cashews to a vegetable stir fry instead of meat. Portion Distortion

by Isabelle Workman A portion is the amount of food that you choose to eat for a meal or a snack. It can be big or small, you decide. A serving is a measured amount of food or drink, such as 1 slice of bread or 1 cup of milk. Many foods that come as a single portion actually contain multiple servings. Average portion sizes have grown so much over the past 25 years that sometimes when the plate arrives, there is enough food for 2 or even 3 people. Growing portion sizes are changing what Americans think of as “normal” portions at home too. We call this portion distortion. Comparisons of portions over the past 25 years. Note how much the larger portions are adding calories to our diet. 25 years ago: Bagel was 3″ in diameter and had 140 calories Today: Bagel is 6 ” in diameter and has 350 calories 25 years ago; Cheeseburger – 1 had 333 calories Today – 1 average cheeseburger has 590 calories 25 years ago: Spaghetti – with 1 cup sauce and 3 small meatballs had 500 calories Today – Spaghetti has 2 cups sauce and 3 large meatballs and has 1,000 calories 25 years ago 1 soda – was 6.5 oz. and had 82 calories Today – 1 soda averages 20 ounces and has over 250 calories 25 years ago Blueberry muffin – was 1.5 oz. and had 210 calories Today – Blueberry muffin is 5 ounces and has over 500 calories. Make mealtimes a priority – make time for family meals when planning your household’s schedule each week. Try to cook, eat up, and clean up together. 4. Halloween is more Irish than St. Patrick’s’ Day. Halloween’s origins come from a Celtic festival for the dead called Samhain. Celts believed the ghosts of the dead roamed the earth on this holiday so people would dress in costumes and leave treats on their front doors to appease the roaming spirits. 3. If you had been around for the earliest Halloween celebrations, you might have worn animal skins and heads. 4. Jack-o’-Lanterns were once made out of turnips, beets, and, potatoes before the pumpkin became the popular item to carve. 5. In some American towns, Halloween was originally referred to as Cabbage night. It came from a Scottish fortune telling game, when girls used cabbage stumps to predict information about their future husbands. In the late 19th century America, country boys reportedly rejoiced in throwing cabbage, corn, and old vegetables. 6. Studies have shown Halloween can make children act mischievously.
